This tennis training program

Not sure what to do with a ball machine or how to improve your tennis? Start here. This plan is designed for beginners to intermediate players using a ball machine for solo practice. Each session takes about 60 minutes and gives you a clear structure to follow on court.

Each session focuses on one area of improvement:

  • Session 1: consistency and control
  • Session 2: movement and footwork
  • Session 3: match-style practice

Keep ball speed controlled. Focus on quality over quantity.

Setup the Machine

  • Place the machine on the baseline, centered
  • Fill hopper with balls
  • Turn master switch ON (battery or AC)
  • Power on via control panel
  • Use panel or remote/app to configure settings
  • Keep remote in your pocket for quick control
  • Press FEED (start/stop) to begin

How to Read Settings

  • Interval = time between balls (0-20, higher = faster)
  • Ball Speed = 0-20 (slow → fast)
  • Spin = -10 (slice) to +10 (topspin)
  • Elevation = 0-200 (low → lob)
  • Random = adds variation to any setting

Session 1 - Consistency & Control

Goal: Build rhythm and reduce unforced errors.

Setup

  • Ball Speed: Medium
  • Spin: Light topspin-10 to +10 (slice to topspin)
  • Interval: 3-4 seconds
  • Horizontal Random (side-to-side variation): Off
  • Vertical Random (depth variation): Off

Machine: baseline center

1. Warm-up - 10 minutes

Start with easy forehands crosscourt, then easy backhands crosscourt.

Focus on:

  • relaxed swing
  • clean contact
  • timing instead of power

Machine: baseline center

2. Forehand consistency - 15 minutes

Use a fixed interval with horizontal and vertical random off.

Hit forehands crosscourt and aim for 10-20 controlled shots in a row.

Focus on:

  • repeating the same swing
  • finishing balanced
  • keeping the ball deep

Machine: baseline center

3. Backhand consistency - 15 minutes

Keep the same setup and repeat the drill on the backhand side.

Focus on:

  • clean contact
  • elevation over the net
  • steady tempo

Machine: baseline center

4. Alternating forehand and backhand - 10 minutes

Use a 2-line drill so the machine alternates between forehand and backhand.

Focus on:

  • early preparation
  • balance between shots
  • smooth recovery after contact

Machine: baseline center

5. Controlled rally - 10 minutes

Turn on narrow horizontal random and rally at medium ball speed.

Try to keep the ball deep and consistent rather than hitting hard.

Key focus: Control first. Power can come later.

Session 2 - Movement & Footwork

Goal: Improve movement and recovery between shots.

Setup

  • Ball Speed: Medium
  • Spin: Topspin-10 to +10 (slice to topspin)
  • Interval: 3-4 seconds
  • Horizontal Random (side-to-side variation): On
  • Vertical Random (depth variation): Off

Machine: baseline center

1. Warm-up movement rally - 10 minutes

Start with narrow horizontal random and get comfortable moving side to side.

Focus on:

  • small adjustment steps
  • staying light on your feet
  • recovering after each shot

Machine: baseline center

2. Side-to-side movement - 15 minutes

Use wide horizontal random.

Move fully across the baseline and recover toward the middle after every shot.

Focus on:

  • getting behind the ball
  • balanced contact
  • quick recovery

Machine: baseline center

3. 2-line movement drill - 15 minutes

Use a 2-line wide drill with one forehand and one backhand.

This should feel more like real movement than Session 1.

Focus on:

  • footwork before the shot
  • not reaching
  • staying balanced

Machine: baseline center

4. Random interval reaction drill - 10 minutes

Use horizontal and vertical random together.

React to the ball and adjust your position early.

Focus on:

  • reading the ball quickly
  • moving early
  • controlling the shot under movement

Machine: baseline center

5. Continuous movement rally - 10 minutes

Keep horizontal random on and try to maintain a steady rally while moving.

Do not rush. Stay smooth and balanced.

Key focus: Move early, recover early, stay balanced.

Session 3 - Match Simulation

Goal: Turn practice into more match-like tennis.

Setup

  • Ball Speed: Medium to slightly fast
  • Spin: Topspin-10 to +10 (slice to topspin)
  • Interval: 3-5 seconds
  • Horizontal Random (side-to-side variation): Mixed
  • Vertical Random (depth variation): Mixed

Machine: baseline center

1. Warm-up rally - 10 minutes

Start with an easy rally using narrow horizontal random.

Settle into rhythm before increasing intensity.

Machine: baseline center

2. Attack drill - 15 minutes

Increase ball speed slightly.

Step inside the baseline when possible and hit with more intent.

Focus on:

  • strong setup
  • decisive footwork
  • controlled aggression

Machine: baseline center

3. Approach and first attacking ball - 15 minutes

Work on stepping in to shorter balls and playing an attacking shot.

Focus on:

  • moving forward confidently
  • hitting through the court
  • recovering for the next ball

Machine: baseline center

4. Serve plus first ball - 10 minutes

Pause the machine, hit a serve, then start the next interval and play the first shot.

If you are training alone without serving each rep, simulate the pattern:

  • start in serve position
  • recover
  • hit the first ball with intent

Machine: baseline center

5. Point simulation - 10 minutes

Use horizontal and vertical random and treat each ball like the start of a point.

Focus on:

  • making good decisions
  • staying composed
  • building a point instead of just hitting balls

Key focus: Practise tennis, not just ball striking.

Tips for better sessions

  • Start slower than you think you need
  • Focus on control before speed
  • Take short breaks between drills
  • Reset the machine if the drill does not feel right
  • Quality reps matter more than hitting lots of balls
  • If you feel rushed, increase the interval
